John Paul the Great - A Pope Who Made History

John Paul the Great - A Pope Who Made History

Duration: 59 minutes

Karol Józef Wojtyla, known as John Paul II since his October 1978 election to the papacy, was born in the Polish town of Wadowice, a small city 50 kilometers from Krakow, on May 18, 1920. Throughout his early twenties, and during World War II, he had to work in a Nazi-run rock quarry to earn a living and to avoid being deported to Germany. In 1942, aware of his call to the priesthood, he began courses in the clandestine seminary of Krakow, run by Cardinal Adam Stefan Sapieha, archbishop of Krakow, and was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Sapieha in Krakow on November 1, 1946. He carried out his priesthood under the constant watchful eye of Poland's communist regime. The Cardinals elected him Pope at the Conclave of October 1978, and he took the name of John Paul II. His election sent cheers through his native Poland since he was the first Slav ever to take the seat of St. Peter. His pontificate, one of the longest in the history of the Church, lasted nearly 27 years. During that time he would change the image of the papacy forever, with a mass appeal never before seen in the history of the Church. John Paul The Great takes you through the extraordinary life of one of the 21st century's greatest men.

Seeking God - The Way of the Monk

Seeking God - The Way of the Monk

Duration: 57 minutes

In a remote canyon in northern New Mexico, the early morning stillness is broken by voices chanting praises to the Lord. And thus begins the daily cycle in the God-centered life and search of the Benedictine monks at the Monastery of Christ in the Desert. Seeking God is a monastic tapestry. The daily life of the monks is interwoven with the seasonal changes and celebrations, and the candid words of the monks as they speak of their life, their hopes and doubts, their hardships, fears and joys, their prayer. Weaving this tapestry together are the hauntingly beautiful chants, songs of praise and reverence, that echo through the darkness before dawn, throughout the day, through the solemnity of Vespers in the evening, and Compline at night. The majestic beauty of the environment, captured in every season, reflects a peace and tranquility that becomes an integral part of this monastic tapestry. The high red rock walls of the canyon where eagles fly cradle the valley whose stillness is broken only by the flowing waters of the Chama River and the winds that occasionally funnel through. Seeking God presents the on-going process of the monastic way through the words and activities of these Benedictine monks as they move through the day and through the seasons in their search for God through prayer, work, study, and song.

Images of Jesus

Images of Jesus

Duration: 52 minutes

While Jesus lived, no one made a record of His face. In His time, no one made a picture, nor a sketch, nor a painting. Since then every image of Jesus came from the minds and hands of those who lived after He died. Thus begins this fascinating film, produced by award-winning filmmaker Perry Wolff, which traces the evolving look of Christ from the first figurations from 320 AD of Jesus as an astonished shepherd boy, to the present day. This is the definitive art history of Jesus Christ. Wolff documents the wooden icons of the Eastern church. The stained glass windows of the great cathedrals. The fresco paintings of the poorer churches. Woodcuts on paper. Silk paintings from the east. Giotto's Lamentation… Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper… The Pieta… The Sistine Chapel… Michelangelo's The Last Judgment… El Greco's Allegory of the Holy League… The dead Christ by Paul Manet… Paul Gauguin's green Christ and yellow Christ… Marc Chagall's stained glass crucifixion… Pablo Picasso's crucifixion… Salvador Dali's Last Supper… Rembrandt's infant Jesus… De la Tour's sleeping savior… Tiepolo's three wise men who came to adore Christ… Jerome Bosch. Mantegna. Albert Durer. Lorenzo Ghiberti. Mantegna. Velazquez. Zubaran. William Holman Hunt. Titian. El Greco. While Jesus lived, no one made a record of his face. No sketch, no painting, no photograph. The look of Jesus has been created by man. The face of every Jesus you see was made by someone's mind and hand.

Xavier - Missionary & Saint

Xavier - Missionary & Saint

Duration: 59 minutes

This is the story of a missionary who died alone on a desolate island within sight of the land of his life's dream, unaware that he had forever changed the face and the race of Christianity. During the Age of Exploration, the world began to shrink as more and more Europeans journeyed far from home where they met the peoples of Africa and the Americas, India and the East. While the history of exploration and globalization tells of murderous mistakes and tragic ignorance, one man's encounter with the diverse world looms large as one of compassion, invitation, and grace. Narrated by Academy Award-winner Liam Neeson and filmed on location in the footsteps of the Jesuit missionary, Xavier: Missionary & Saint, features stunning scenery from Rome, Spain, Paris, India, China, and Japan as well as interviews with world-renowned scholars in the fields of history and theology. Through scholarship and image, Xavier commemorates the 500th anniversary of the birth of the most successful missionary since St. Paul.
