God's Open Hand

God's Open Hand

Duration: 68 minutes

This film charts the course of fledgling democracy in Afghanistan with a focus on Afghanistan's historic first presidential election as seen through the eyes of the Afghan people, as well as the major presidential candidates and western observers. The film features interviews with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, presidential candidates Younis Qanooni, Homayoun Assefy and Afghanistan's only female candidate Dr. Massouda Jalal. Also included are western observers Reginald Austin Director of the United Nations Assistance Mission to Afghanistan and exclusive interviews with leaders of Revolutionary Association of Women of Afghanistan (RAWA). The most compelling voices of this documentary come from the Afghan people, desperate for a leader who can unify and rebuild their shattered country, struggling to understand western style democracy, longing for peace and stability in a land that has known only war and oppression. God's Open Hand begins in the weeks leading up to election day as tensions mount from threats of Taliban and Al Qaeda attacks, rumors of backroom deals, American influence and voter intimidation from candidates and insurgents. Culminating in an election day riddled with problems, this film presents the viewer with an open and balanced look at Afghanistan's troubled first attempt at democracy.

No One Ever Wins

No One Ever Wins

Duration: 49 minutes

'No One Ever Wins' documents life in Lebanon in the aftermath of the unexpected and suddenly ignited war between Hezbollah and Israel in July of 2006. The story is told through the interviewees' experiences and personal stories, among them American/Lebanese businessmen, a Shi'ite schoolteacher that lost several of her students in the bombardment, ordinary families whose homes were destroyed by rockets, and United Nations peacekeepers doing their best to restore stability and peace to the lives of the Lebanese. From personal reports of life in Beirut during the war, to a journey across the devastated landscape of South Lebanon - where the brunt of the destruction occured - this documentary speaks with ordinary Lebanese civilians of their loss, not only of physical property and personal lives, but a longer lasting loss of peace and prosperity, and hope for the future. The documentary also included a harrowing day with the UN bomb disposal team, and an insightful record of a Hezbollah victory rally only weeks after the 33 day war.

The Line of Fire - Gulf War

The Line of Fire - Gulf War

Duration: 48 minutes

On August 3rd 1990, Iraq, under its ferocious dictator Saddam Hussein, invaded Kuwait, its oil-rich neighbour. Not long out of a war with Iran, Iraq badly under-estimated the reaction of the watching world to its unprovoked attack; in particular, they believed that the US would not dare to become involved. A coalition against Iraq was formed and it struck back with awesome power in January 1991. Iraq's air defence system and the country's infra-structure were taken apart by air attacks that utilised the very latest warfare technology - and it was technology as much as anything else that brought Iraq's armed forces to its knees. Saddam had promised the 'mother of all battles' - words that came to haunt him and his army as they were caught in the open on the bloody road to Basra.

Voices of War - Korea

Voices of War - Korea

Duration: 44 minutes

Nearly 27,000 Canadians served during the Korean War from 1950 – 1953. Over 500 were killed and more than 1000 wounded. Yet nearly half a century since the Armistice was signed in Panmunjon, most Canadians are unaware of the role Canada played in that conflict. Korea is known as “Canada's forgotten war,” with most people seeing it as little more than an obscure “policing action” by the United Nations, played out in the shadow of the devastation of World War II. Voices of War: Korea is the story of the Canadian soldiers, sailors and airmen who served in that conflict; a first person account as seen through the eyes of the Canadians who fought and died there. This is their story, a largely forgotten accounting of battles waged, blood spilt, lives spent and ground won and lost. The Korean veterans' stories take their place alongside the stories of Canada's other veterans; they are our last veterans of the twentieth century, our last - Voices of War.

Voices of War - A Soldier's Voice

Voices of War - A Soldier's Voice

Duration: 44 minutes

In Canada, the living memory of World War I is now fading, as are the lives of those who served as our defenders in the trenches and the front lines of Europe. Who will speak for the fallen when the last veteran has passed away? Who will help us remember those who sacrificed everything to protect our freedom? The program features 11 veterans who served during World War I. They reveal their experiences of enlisting, training and fighting overseas, and tell us about the friends and family they left behind. Finally, they speak about their darkest moments and the horror of being in the carnage of the Great War. World War I was a signal time in the hearts and minds of Canadians who were there. Today, the veterans from this War are now few and far between. A Soldier's Voice hopes to create a living legacy of the remaining veterans of World War I.

Voices of War - Stories from the Trenches

Voices of War - Stories from the Trenches

Duration: 44 minutes

Of the more than 700,000 who served in the Royal Canadian Army during World War II, less than a quarter survive today, time having decimated their ranks as surely as war claimed their comrades. From common foot-soldiers fighting in the streets of Ortona or on the beaches of Normandy, to tank commanders in Sicily and Italy, or prisoners of war in Japan, Canada's army saw action on all the major fronts of World War II. Stories From The Trenches chronicles the experiences of these and other Canadian veterans who served in that world-encompassing conflict as members of Canada's Army.

Voices of War - Stories from the Air

Voices of War - Stories from the Air
