Scorched Earth - The Doodlebug

Scorched Earth - The Doodlebug

Duration: 47 minutes

By 1943 the tide of the war had finally started to flow in favour of the Allied forces. As the industrial might and great cities of Germany began to suffer under the constant aerial bombardments, Hitler promised a devastating revenge. 'Vengeance weapons' were developed and deployed and were soon causing indiscriminate damage to cities such as London and Antwerp. Although deployment of V1 and V2 rockets signalled the death throws of the crumbling Third Reich, given more time they could have completely changed the outcome of the war. The detailed analysis and stunning computer graphics within this programme clearly describe the fascinating story of the 'Doodlebugs'.

Military Aviation - Focke-Wulf FW 190

Military Aviation - Focke-Wulf FW 190

Duration: 58 minutes

No combat aircraft ever achieved perfection, but at the time of its debut the FW 190 probably came as near to this elusive goal as any other fighter. This aircraft was undoubtedly the finest warplane ever produced by Germany and from the moment it entered the theatre of war, the FW 190 achieved a slim margin of superiority over the RAF aircraft in fighter versus fighter combat. In the ground attack role it subsequently proved its ability to absorb considerable punishment and in return deliver a more then powerful punch.

Military Aviation - Hawker Hurricane

Military Aviation - Hawker Hurricane

Duration: 71 minutes

It's eight wing - mounted Colt - Brownings spitting flame, the Hawker Hurricane swooped to dispatch over two - thirds of all enemy aircraft destroyed in the Battle of Britain. Courageous squadron commander Douglas Bader, 14 - kill hero 'Cobber Kain, Ginger Kacey - the top Battle of Britain ace with 18 victims - and many other RAF pilots owed their reputations and their lives to this toughest mount of all. The Hurricane was outnumbered but never outclassed, designed to hit the enemy hard, absorb tremendous punishment, yet live to fight another day. Featuring colour footage of the last surviving aircraft alongside original combat film, this is the definitive documentary of a fighter plane that truly changed the course of history.

Night Bombers

Night Bombers

Duration: 59 minutes

A unique record of the nightly air raids made on Germany during World War II. There are no actors – this is the real thing as it happened. Contains rare archive colour footage from No. 1 Group, Royal Air Force operating Avro Lancaster bombers, in action, winter 1943. In the winter of 1943, RAF Bomber Command was sending massive raids almost every night into the heart of Germany. This is the story of one of them, an attack on Berlin, probably the most heavily defended target of them all and one which made terrible demands on the courage of the aircrew. On the long, cold and desperately dangerous missions over Northern Germany and back to a difficult landing in wintry England, thousands of men died or suffered ghastly injuries. One must imagine that they were terrified much of the time, but there is very little sign of doubt or anxiety on the brave faces in Iliffe Cozens' film. Although certain scenes had to be re-created for technical reasons, make no mistake, the raid is a real one and there are no actors.
